In the early 1970s,as part of his call for a "materialist" film history,Jean-Louis Comolli proposed that we could best explain the history of depth by appeal to the general notion of ideology.Comolli argues that previous historians have taken the technology and technique of the cinema to be ideologically neutral.By contrast, the "materialist" historian would be sensitive to the economic and ideological forces that govern cinematic representation.
